Qualification Description

This qualification reflects the role of mine managers in an open cut coal or metalliferous mine or a quarry, who perform tasks involving a high level of autonomy and requiring the application of significant judgement in planning and determining the selection of equipment, roles and techniques for themselves and others.

They are required to demonstrate the application of a broad range of technical, managerial, coordination and planning skills and implement safety management plans.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication.

Entry Requirements

Participants who enrol in this course should be employed in a statutory position as per Department of Natural Resources and Mines Guidelines OR as an alternate for the abovementioned position description.

Introduction

This Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Candidate Assessment Kit is for persons with extensive skills and knowledge from the Resource and Infrastructure Industries (RII) who perform tasks involving a high level of autonomy and requiring the application of significant judgement in planning and determining the selection of equipment, roles and techniques for themselves and others. They are required to demonstrate the application of a broad range of technical, managerial, coordination and planning skills and implement safety management plans.

Suitable candidates may be people who have been performing the role of Site Senior Executive (SSE) in a quarry, open cut coal or metalliferous mine.

The RPL Candidate Assessment Pathway will be:

  • Discussion with candidate to determine which units to make up the qualification within the packaging rules; and a brief understanding of their current and previous work background;
  • MinRes will then customise the Candidate's RPL Assessment Kit and provide this for completion;
  • MinRes will review the evidence provided against the criteria, performance evidence and knowledge evidence to identify any gaps - (there are three (3) sections required for full completion);
  • *Based on the review, where deemed necessary MinRes will hold with the candidate with a Competency Conversation (CC) with the candidate to complete any gaps identified after RPL Evidence Assessment is completed in full as described in the above steps.

A MinRes appointed Assessor will assess the evidence provided and any gap assessment completed by the candidate to make a fair and valid RPL assessment decision.

Instructions to Candidate

This RPL Candidate Assessment Kit has four (4) sections. The first three (3) sections listed below must all be completed by the candidate and submitted to their nominated Assessor:

1) Document/Evidence List

Complete the customised self-reflection evidence list of your documented evidence applicable to the performance and knowledge criteria for each Unit of Competency (UoC) in the qualification. You will notice that some documents may apply to several UoC's.

2) Self-Reflection Evidence Table

This table describes the criteria required and may have examples of the types of evidence that you can submit. Choose the units of competence in accordance with the packaging rules. A direct Credit Transfer may be granted where you have statements of attainment for the required unit or for equivalent units. You must show currency for these units where the statements were issued more than two (2) years ago.

RPL - Decide what evidence you have to demonstrate these criteria and record in the Self-Reflection Evidence Support column. Record the document number from the document list in the reference document column. Provide at least one (1) document per criteria of demonstrated experience and evidence required/suggested.

3) Project

The project will provide direct evidence of your skills and knowledge for this qualification. Candidates must submit this project in a report format with suitable headings.

4) Competency Conversation (CC)*

Having gathered the evidence accessible to you, you will meet with your Assessor, in person or via telephone, etc. This meeting is often called a 'Competency Conversation' (CC) or a 'Professional Conversation'. The conversation is conducted by the Assessor with questions prepared by them in advance. The conversation is intended to help you recall examples of your relevant knowledge and skills. Your Assessor will note your responses to questions to gather enough evidence to enable a judgement to be made. You may be asked to give detailed answers to demonstrate your knowledge. If you provide photos, for example, they may be used to stimulate conversation. This will give you the opportunity to discuss your own work, giving the Assessor an idea of the range of equipment you use, safety precautions you take and the environmental factors you deal with.
